TICK is a small, bloodsucking parasite belonging to the class Arachnida and closely related to the SPIDER. A tick has 4 pairs of legs and highly specialized mouth parts for piercing and attaching to mammals and birds. Ticks often cling to vegetation and wait to lodge on to a passing host. Of the 40 species known in Canada, 2 are found in BC: the Rocky Mountain wood tick (Dermacentor andersoni) and the Pacific wood tick (Ixodes pacificus).
