TLELL, pop 223, on the east coast of Graham Island, 35 km north of SKIDEGATE in the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS, is a residential and AGRICULTURAL district first settled by William Thomas Hodges, or "Mexican Tom." In about 1904 he established a ranch on the banks of the Tlell R that is now the Richardson Ranch (see also CATTLE INDUSTRY). An early hotel was built nearby. The name is a HAIDA word of uncertain meaning.
