TRETHEWEY, James, mill owner (b 1833 England; d 24 May 1906, Vancouver). The patriarch of a large family, he arrived in Ontario in the 1850s and prospered as a mill owner and homesteader. In 1875 he came to BC and settled at MISSION, where his wife Mary Ann ran a maternity home, a hotel and a general store. He moved to CHILLIWACK in 1891 to build a mill complex at ELK CREEK and with his sons began the first large-scale LOGGING on HARRISON LK. Five sons engaged in a variety of businesses....
