UNION STEAMSHIP CO was a shipping line established in 1889 to provide freight and passenger service to the remote LOGGING camps, SALMON CANNERIES and small settlements springing up along the coast. Its first vessel, the 55-m steam yacht Cutch, originally owned by an Indian maharajah, began sailing to NANAIMO the next year.
