VARLEY, Frederick Horsman, artist (b 2 Jan 1881, Sheffield, England; d 8 Sept 1969, Toronto). Trained as a painter in Europe, he immigrated to Canada in 1912 and found work as a commercial illustrator in Toronto. He received critical acclaim for his work as an official war artist during WWI and in 1920 he became a founding member of the Group of Seven.
