Victoria Cross

VICTORIA CROSS (VC) was the highest award for military valour in the armed forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856 during the Crimean War, it was presented to 93 Canadians before being supplanted in 1972 by Canada's own bravery awards. The VC was awarded to 20 soldiers, sailors and aviators with a connection to BC or to a BC battalion (see also MILITARY HISTORY). During WWII, of the 13 VCs awarded to Canadians, 5 went to British Columbians.
