Walbran, John Thomas


WALBRAN, John Thomas, mariner (b 23 Mar 1848, Ripon, England; d 31 Mar 1913, Victoria). He left school at age 14 to train for the British merchant marine and he was chief officer on the steamship Islander when it arrived in VICTORIA at the end of 1888. Walbran remained on the West Coast, commanding ships for the CANADIAN PACIFIC NAVIGATION CO and the Canadian government. After retiring in 1904, he turned full-time to his hobby of recording maritime place names, and in 1909 he published the work...
