WESTERN HOCKEY LEAGUE (WHL) is a major junior league, based in Calgary, consisting of 18 teams from the 4 western provinces and Oregon and Washington states. Created in 1966 as the Canadian Major Junior HOCKEY League with 7 teams from Saskatchewan and Alberta, it expanded into Manitoba the next season and became the Western Canada Hockey League. The first teams from BC joined in 1971. In 1976 the first US franchise, the Portland Winter Hawks, entered and in 1978 the WCHL was renamed the WHL....
