WHITE, William Lloyd "Bill," labour leader (b 7 Nov 1905, near Gravenhurst, ON; d July 2001, Vancouver). He was raised on a farm near Yellowgrass, SK. He joined the RCMP in 1930 and sailed into the western Arctic on the ST ROCH, under Henry Larsen. After leaving the RCMP, White became a burner in VANCOUVER's wartime shipyards, and he rose to the presidency of the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Union of Canada, Local 1, a position he held from 1944 to 1955.
