WILMER, pop 264, a small community on the west side of the COLUMBIA R, 105 km southeast of GOLDEN just north of Windermere Lk, was named for Wilmer Wells, a government official who owned a SAWMILL in the region. It was originally a MINING settlement called Peterborough. Wilmer Marsh is an important refuge for migratory birds and other wildlife. The site of historic KOOTENAE HOUSE is near here.
