WOODWARD, Charles A., merchant (b 19 July 1852, Mono, ON; d 2 June 1937, Vancouver). Raised on a backwoods farm in Ontario, he left to take up storekeeping. In 1875 he moved to Manitoulin Island and established the first WOODWARD'S STORE. He came west to VANCOUVER in 1891 and the next year opened a general store downtown. Woodward prospered during the economic boom associated with the Klondike GOLD RUSH and in 1903 he opened Woodward's Department Store at its long-time location on Hastings St....
