YALE, James Murray, fur trader (b circa 1799; d 7 May 1871, Victoria). He joined the HBC in 1815 and was among the first group of HBC workers to settle in NEW CALEDONIA after the merger with the NORTH WEST CO. He was in charge of Fort George from 1821 to 1824, during which time a dispute over his aboriginal mistress resulted in the murder of 2 of his men.
