YATES, J. Michael, writer (b 10 Apr 1938, Fulton, MO; d 15 Apr 2019, Vancouver). He moved to VANCOUVER in 1966 to teach creative writing at UBC, where he founded SONO NIS PRESS and encouraged the development of a writing style that came to be called West Coast Surrealism. He left teaching in 1971. His own innovative, challenging poetry began appearing in 1967.
