YELLOWHEAD PASS (el 1,131 m), on the BC–Alberta border 25 km west of Jasper, is a principal transportation corridor across the ROCKY MTS. It is named for a blond METIS trapper who guided HBC traders through the pass in 1820 (see FUR TRADE, LAND-BASED), though it was originally called the Leather Pass because the company used it to transport hides to its posts in NEW CALEDONIA. The nearby town of TÊTE JAUNE CACHE also reflects the "yellow head" of this blond trapper. A party of OVERLANDERS...
