In 1791, just as courageous young Frances Barkley sailed for the second time toward the uncharted coast of British Columbia, women in New Brunswick were being formally deprived of the right to vote. This exclusion of women from the political process would not end in Canada until women in Quebec finally obtained an unrestricted franchise in 1940, almost 150 years later.
