Achilles Bank


Achilles Bank (49˚33'00" 124˚30'00" E of Hornby I, Str of Georgia). Named in 1945 after HMNZS Achilles, a British Leander-class light cruiser built 1932 and on loan to the NZ navy. The ship joined RN cruisers Exeter and Ajax to overcome the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in the 1939 Battle of the River Plate.
