Akam Point


Akam Point (50˚53'00" 127˚12'00" N side of Queen Charlotte Str, SE of Blunden Hbr). Chief Engine Room Artificer Thomas Akam, of Victoria, was killed in action while serving aboard the RCN destroyer Margaree. HMCS Margaree sank on convoy duty after colliding with a merchant vessel in the N Atlantic on Oct 22, 1940; 142 hands were lost. Akam was born at Tottenham, England, in 1906 and joined the RCNVR in 1926 at Hamilton. He is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial.
