Alert Point (49˚59'51" 127˚27'20" W side of Lookout I, Kyuquot Sd). Named in 1947 after one of the first sealing schooners to operate on the BC coast, owned by Capt Hugh McKay and Capt William Spring. McKay arrived in Victoria in 1848; Spring in 1853. These pioneer coastal traders specialized first in cured and salted salmon, then entered the sealing business with several vessels in the late 1860s. They acquired the Alert in 1864.
