Ashe Head


Ashe Head (48 ̊26'00" 123 ̊26'00" E side of Esquimalt Hbr, S Vancouver I). Named in 1847 after Lt Edward David Ashe (d 1895), who served in BC waters aboard HMS Fisgard, under Capt John Duntze, and was based on the Pacific Station, 1844–47. He retired in 1866 with the rank of cdr. The area around Ashe Head, known to the Songhees people as Eyellnuk, meaning “clear” or “open field,” is now a Songhees First Nation reserve. W
