Bacchante Bay (49˚27'00" 126˚02'00" NE end of Shelter Inlet, NE of Flores I, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). HMS Bacchante, a screw steam frigate of 3,746 tonnes, with 51 guns, was a frequent visitor to Esquimalt in the early 1860s, under Capt Donald Mackenzie. It was the flagship of Rear Adm Sir Thomas Maitland, cdr-in-chief of the RN’s Pacific squadron, 1860–62. The 72-m vessel was launched at Portsmouth dockyard in 1859 and had a complement of 560 men.
