Bate Passage


Bate Passage (50˚54'00" 127˚49'00" Between Nigei I and Hope I off N end of Vancouver I). Capt William Thornton Bate (1820–57) was a noted RN surveying officer who was never in BC but spent most of his career in Asia, charting the coast of China with HMS Royalist and Bittern. He captured the port of Canton during the 2nd Anglo-Chinese War, while in command of HMS Actaeon, but was killed while storming the walls of Guangzhou itself.
