Bazan Bay (48˚38'00" 123˚24'00" E side of Saanich Peninsula, S of Sidney). Antonio Valdés y Bazán (1744–1816) was a celebrated Spanish naval officer who became capt-gen and minister of the navy. He put much effort into improving the education of Spanish naval officers and promoted a number of scientific maritime expeditions, including that of Alejandro Malaspina to the Pacific.
