Berens Island


Berens Island (48˚25'00" 123˚24'00" W side of Victoria Hbr, SE end of Vancouver I). Named by the officers of Ft Victoria after the father and son duo of Joseph Berens (1774–1853) and Henry Hulse Berens (1804–83). Joseph, a lawyer, was deputy gov of the HBC, 1807–12, and gov, 1812–22. His son Henry Hulse was deputy gov, 1856–58, and gov, 1858–63. Henry was also a director of the Bank of England. A lighthouse was built on the island in 1874 but was converted to an automated beacon...
