Bessborough Bay (50˚29'00" 125˚47'00" N of Hardwicke I and Johnstone Str). Named by Admiralty surveyors in 1865 after the earls of Bessborough, a powerful Irish family. Edward Ponsonby (1851–1920), an RN midshipman who served for a time on the BC coast, was a nephew of John George Brabazon Ponsonby (1809–80), the 5th Earl of Bessborough.
