Bowyer Island


Bowyer Island (49˚25'30" 123˚16'00" Howe Sd, NE of Bowen I, NW of Vancouver). Sir George Bowyer (1740–1800) had a significant career with the RN. During the American Revolution (1775–83) he commanded first HMS Burford and then HMS Albion, and after the war was in charge of HMS Boyne. In 1794, as a rear adm, with HMS Barfleur as his flagship, he lost a leg (but gained a pension) in the naval victory over the French known as the Glorious First of June.
