Butler Shoal


Butler Shoal (52˚38'00" 129˚14'00" In Beauchemin Channel, off W side of Aristazabal I). Sapper Robert Butler (1842–1917), born at Manchester, UK, was part of the Columbia detachment of Royal Engineers, which served in BC 1858–63. He was the detachment bugler—a boy soldier—and only 17 when he and two other sappers helped capture a notorious fugitive who had robbed and killed at least eight gold miners.
