Cates Bay


Cates Bay (49˚25'00" 123˚19'00" NE side of Bowen I, Howe Sd, NW of Vancouver). Capt John Andrew “Jack” Cates (1862–1942) was one of five seafaring brothers, all of whom influenced BC marine history. Born in Maine, Jack arrived in Vancouver in 1886, worked on coastal vessels, bought the tugs Swan and Lois, then joined the Klondike gold rush, where he earned enough to buy a steamer, the Defiance, and begin a ferry service in Howe Sd.
