Chemainus


Chemainus (48˚55'00" 123˚43'00" Between Duncan and Ladysmith, SE side of Vancouver I), Chemainus Bay (48˚55'00" 123˚42'00" Just E of Chemainus). The district was named in the 1850s after its First Nation inhabitants, who, in turn, derived their name from the horseshoe shape of the bay. This shape suggested the bite mark that a shaman might leave on a tribe member during a ritual performance, and Chemainus is an adaptation of an Island Halkomelem phrase meaning “bitten breast.” The...
