Coles Bay


Coles Bay (48˚38'00" 123˚28'00" W side of Saanich Peninsula, N of Victoria). John Coles (1832–1910), born at London, England, was a midshipman aboard HMS Thetis, under Capt Augustus Kuper, on the Pacific Station, 1851–53. He retired from the RN after the Crimean War, returned to BC in 1857, took up land and farmed near the bay now named for him, marrying Mary Harcus at Victoria in 1860.
