Don Island


Don Island (49˚10'00" 122˚59'00" In the Fraser R, W of Annacis I). The origin of this well-established local name is not recorded, though area residents have suggested that it may be a misspelling of Dawn, a woman’s name. The island became the site of a Japanese colony in the early 1900s when Jinzaburo Oikawa built bunkhouses there to accommodate immigrant workers at nearby canneries.
