Victoria pioneer Philip Dorset Goepel (1854–1932) came to Canada from England in 1875; his wife, Fanny (1858–1928), arrived in 1883. Philip was listed as a longshoreman in the 1891 census and as both a clerk at Victoria and a farmer on Mayne I in the 1901 version.
