Haisla


Haisla (53˚58'50" 128˚38'50" E side of Kitimat Arm, just S of Kitimat). This is the main community of the Haisla First Nation and is often called Kitamaat Village, its traditional name. In the Haisla (or Xaisla) language, the word haisla refers to “those living at the river mouth.” The Haisla people comprise two main cultural groups that merged in the 1940s: the Kitamaat, from Douglas Channel, and the Henaaksiala (Kitlope), from Gardner Canal.
