Harris Island (48˚25'00" 123˚17'00" E of Oak Bay, E of Turkey Head and Victoria). Thomas Harris (1817–84), born in Herefordshire, was a member of Vancouver I’s legislative assembly (1862), first mayor of Victoria (1862–65) and later the sheriff of Vancouver I. After working and marrying at Liverpool, he immigrated to San Francisco in 1854 and arrived at Victoria three years later, where he set up in business very successfully as a butcher and cattle dealer until going bankrupt in 1867....
