Henderson Point (48˚36'00" 123˚29'00" W side of Saanich Peninsula, N of Hagan Bight, NW of Victoria). John “Russian Jack” Henderson (1831–93), born at Riga, Latvia, and his wife, Betsy Pope (1833–94), originally from England, were early settlers in the Saanich area. Jack, like so many others, had originally come to BC for the Cariboo gold rush. Betsy’s parents, Abraham (1805–86) and Sarah Pope, had settled in 1874 on a homestead where Mt Newton Cottage, a heritage building built...
