Hyashi Cove

Hyashi Cove (48˚48'00" 123˚18'00" N side of Otter Bay, W side of N Pender I, Gulf Is). T Hyashi (b 1853), who came to Canada from Japan in 1890, owned property here at the turn of the 19th century and cut cordwood to fuel the steam-powered canneries at the mouth of the Fraser R. He and his employees (the 1901 census lists 28 “lodgers” next to the entry for Hyashi) may have made charcoal for export as well. Hyashi’s name is also seen spelled Hiashi.
