Irby Point

Irby Point (49˚31'00" 123˚18'00" S end of Anvil I, Howe Sd, NW of Vancouver). In 1794, Midshipman Frederick Paul Irby (1779–1844) of HMS Montagu was present at the English Channel victory known as the Glorious First of June. As capt of the frigate Amelia from 1807 to 1813 he gained renown for a bloody but inconclusive action against L’Arethuse, a French frigate. Irby was made a CB in 1831 and became a rear adm in 1837.
