Martin Islands


Martin Islands (50˚06'00" 124˚49'00" Desolation Sd, NE end of Str of Georgia). These geographical features were named by Admiralty surveyors about 1861 in association with nearby Mink I and Otter I, all after fur-bearing animals. The spelling should thus be Marten, not Martin. In 1945 the name was changed to the Tory Is, after the chartered HBC supply barque Tory, which sailed from England to Victoria around Cape Horn and back via China in 1850–52.
