Mill Bay


Mill Bay (48˚39'00" 123˚33'00" NW side of Saanich Inlet, NW of Victoria). A US immigrant named Henry S Sheppard operated the first sawmill at this site, applying to lease the land in 1860. In those days it was the only mill between Nanaimo and Esquimalt. The stream that flows E into the bay and once powered the mill was originally known as Mill Ck, but the name was changed before 1924 to Shawnigan Ck, after the lake it drains.
