Montagu Channel


Montagu Channel (49˚32'00" 123˚16'00" E side of Howe Sd, between Anvil I and the mainland, N of Vancouver), Montagu Point (50˚38'00" 126˚12'00" S side of Knight Inlet, opposite Gilford I). The 74-gun HMS Montagu, built at Chatham in 1779, was part of the English Channel fleet under Adm Lord Howe that defeated the French in the 1794 battle known as the Glorious First of June. Its cdr, who was killed in the action, was Capt James Montagu (1752–94), who had apparently requested this ship...
