Mount Newton (48˚36'45" 123˚26'39" John Dean Provincial Park, N Saanich, Saanich Peninsula, NW of Victoria). The origin of this name is not certain. It first appears on an 1855 map by HBC surveyor Joseph Pemberton (later surveyor gen of the colony of Vancouver I). It is known that, in 1854, Pemberton had a draftsman named Newton as an assistant.
