Mudge Island


Mudge Island (49˚08'00" 123˚47'00" Part of the De Courcy Group, just S of Gabriola I, Gulf Is). Named about 1859 by Capt George Richards for William Tertius Fitzwilliam Mudge (1831–63), a lt aboard HMS Pylades, under Capt Michael de Courcy. He served on the Pacific Station, 1859–60. Mudge drowned in the wreck of HMS Orpheus on the Manaku bar in NZ. He was a great-nephew of Adm Zachary Mudge, who sailed with Capt George Vancouver as a lt and for whom Cape Mudge (qv) is named.
