New Brighton (49˚27'02" 123˚26'16" SW side of Gambier I, Howe Sd, NW of Vancouver). Named about 1910 by Thomas Austin (1855–1946), the first settler in this area, after the seaside resort of Brighton, England. Austin, apparently a native of Newcastle-under-Lyme, arrived in BC in 1892 and lived on Gambier from 1901 to 1945, then moved to Vancouver, where he died.
