Newcastle Island (49˚11'00" 123˚56'00" N side of Nanaimo Hbr, off E side of Vancouver I), Newcastle Island Passage (49˚11'00" 123˚57'00" W of Newcastle I). HBC officials realized in the early 1850s that coal was abundant in the Nanaimo region. They named this island, which had clear evidence of coal seams, after the ancient British coal city of Newcastle upon Tyne.
