Northumberland Channel


Northumberland Channel (49˚09'00" 123˚51'00" Between Gabriola I and E side of Vancouver I, just E of Nanaimo). HBC officials named this channel in 1852 for Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland (1792–1865), after the discovery of coal at Nanaimo. The English county of Northumberland was so famous for its coal that its name had become synonymous with coal manufacturing and wealth.
