Opitsat


Opitsat (49˚10'00" 125˚55'00" SW end of Meares I, N of Tofino, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). Opitsat (or Opitsaht) is the main community of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, a member group of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. In the early 2000s the village had a population of about 200. The name was translated as “island that the moon lands on” (in the Nuu-chah-nulth newspaper Ha-shilth-sa) and as “place having an island in front” (by BC historians Helen and Philip Akrigg). In...
