Pelorus Point

Pelorus Point (48˚43'00" 123˚17'00" E end of Moresby I, SE of Saltspring I, Gulf Is). A pelorus is a surveying instrument similar to a compass, used to take bearings on distant objects. The word is said to derive from the name of Hannibal’s pilot, who was killed when Hannibal thought—erroneously, as it turned out—that his guide was misleading him; in remorse, the Carthaginian cdr is supposed to have named Cape Peloro, at the NE tip of Sicily, after the murdered man.
