Peterson Islet


Peterson Islet (50˚23'00" 125˚54'00" S side of Race Passage, SW of Helmcken I, Johnstone Str, just E of Kelsey Bay). Presumably named for Theodore Peterson (c 1859–1936), a native of Denmark, who came to BC as the cook on a sailing vessel, took up land at nearby Hkusam Bay in 1895 and married a Lekwiltok First Nation woman. He and a partner, Edward Wilson, built the Ruby House—a combined store, post office, hotel and saloon—and the bay became a steamship stop for that part of the coast....
