Piddington Island


Piddington Island (52˚05'00" 128˚16'00" Off SW side of Campbell I, SW of Bella Bella). Midshipman Peter Grosvenor Piddington of the RN, a native of Victoria, died in action, aged 20, when the British battleship Royal Oak was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Is in 1939. Nearby Peter Bay is also named for him. The Royal Oak was an obsolete WWI vessel, and its sinking had little effect on the course of the war, but the tragically heavy loss of life—833 men—so early...
