Protection Island (49˚10'44" 123˚55'12" SE of Newcastle I, Nanaimo Hbr, off SE side of Vancouver I). This feature was first named Douglas I, after Vancouver I gov James Douglas, by the officers of the HBC. In 1853 it became Protection I—a name descriptive of the island’s position, which shelters the harbour of Nanaimo.
