Ruth Island


Ruth Island (49˚16'55" 124˚06'40" NE of Nanoose Hbr, SW of Winchelsea I, off E side of Vancouver I). Named in 1905 by Cdr John Parry of HMS Egeria in association with nearby Maude I, which commemorates former RN officer Eustace Maude, who later settled on Mayne I (see Maude Bay). Ruth Katinka Maude (1886–1914) was his eldest daughter. She came to N America from England with her family and grew up on Mayne I, where her father was a magistrate and owned a hotel.
